This sculpture by Suraj Kumar Sahu was hand built from red terracotta by pinching, carving and assembling the form without moulds. The surface was pierced and brushed with bamboo tools and needles before oxidation firing, to create a weathered, sandstone-like texture. Appearing as an archaeological relic, the work merges the human body with sacred architecture. It suggests that places of devotion also carry the labour and enduring presence of the anonymous makers who built them.
