Thunderbird dance costume

Carved in western red cedar and painted in black, red and green acrylic latex paint, this mask consists of over 60 elements and opens and closes on four sides. A canvas cape is decorated with white and black turkey feathers, long john trousers with rabbit fur and a tail added with claws and fish on the feet. This costume is used in the potlatch ceremony to represent the mythological being of the Thunderbird transforming into a human.
