Soft territory

This piece continues DeJeonge Reese’s exploration of Black hair as a tool of survival. Made from synthetic hair and scrap fabric, it examines the idea that hair can contain coded messages and practical guidance, just like quilting. The two traditions are shaped by resilience, strategy and care. Through this work, she honours the legacy of her ancestors and ongoing innovation in Black culture.
