Tignon law

For this piece, DeJeonge Reese was drawn to the complex role scarves have played in the lives of African American women. She reflected on the Tignon Laws of 1780s Louisiana, which made it illegal for Black women to wear their hair uncovered in public. In resistance, they wrapped their hair in bold colours, intricate patterns and masterful styles.
