This lidded black box captures the textures of animal hide, enhanced by urushi lacquer. Yoko Ichikawa named the series of shippi boxes Mimic because, to her, the lacquer seems to mimic life. “It also came to me that the animal skin, container of life, has now become a box, another container for something precious,” she says.
