Scroll of violin, Guarneri del Gesù model

This is the scroll from a violin made from Balkan maple. Here, the use of carving tools is very evident, as the piece has been left entirely free of final smoothing. This is where the maker can add their most personal aesthetic touches. It is a highly individual interpretation of Guarneri del Gesù’s late work, around 1740–1744. The finish is fresh and direct from the gouge cut, completed with linseed oil varnish and blonde shellac pigments.
