Some call it scagliola, others marble stucco or artificial marble: all these terms refer to a traditional craft originally developed in central Italy which bloomed in Florence in the 17th century. Initially it was regarded as a 'poorer' version of Commesso Fiorentino, which is made with semi-precious stones. But in time, scagliola developed into an art, and today Bianco Bianchi’s workshop is considered to be an international point of reference for this particular type of technique. Alessandro and Elisabetta, Bianco’s son and daughter, have developed a six-day course (44 hours in total) in which they teach the techniques, materials, components and history of scagliola. Participants learn how to create tiles and other small objects from the initial pouring of the material to the final polishing.
