Bell casting workshop in Cantabria

with Abel Portilla

Learn to cast and tune a small bell from metal

Abel Portilla opens the doors to visitors for a 4-hour hands-on introduction workshop to the rare art of casting bells, according to methods used in the Middle Ages. The following materials will be used: clay, horse manure and hemp wax among others. With these elements and the mastery of fire, unique pieces will be made. Likewise, the techniques of tuning the dominant note in the five partials of the bells will be taught. The course will take place in San Bartolomé de Vierna (Cantabria), in a 16th-century workshop, used by bell ringing ancestors. Join Abel for a inspiring experience in which fire meets metal.
