Bags that shine with creativity

  • Tika is a self-taught bag maker
  • She is inspired by nature, architecture and folding principles
  • She received an award at the NY Independent Handbag Designer initiative in 2014

Tika continuously evolves her leather bags through testing, refinement and close attention to proportion, construction and finishes. "After an early career in international institutions, I chose to build a practice rooted in authorship and material intelligence," she says. This decision led Tika to study fashion in Florence, and she opened her first workshop in Barcelona in 2014. Today, she designs both independent collections and bespoke handbags, and collaborates with other artists to produce unique pieces. "At the centre of my work is a constant dialogue between thinking and making. I aim to create objects that are coherent, considered and alive through use," she says. Tika's practice also involves teaching and sharing her knowledge through workshops and handbag creation courses at art academies.

Why did you start making handbags?
I have asked myself this question often – creating clothes or theatre costumes can be equally exciting, but the answer is that there is something special about handbags. They hold what a woman needs to have by her side and values most, as well as reflect her personality at the same time.
How do you work with jewellery elements?
I make my bags entirely by hand, and I design and commission the metal elements and the jewellery that I adorn them with. For bespoke pieces, I collaborate closely with clients.
Does the Spanish tradition of leather craftsmanship play a role in your work?
Indeed, it has been a great influence in my work. In Spain, there is a wonderfully rich variety of leather types and colours available. One of the first steps in my creation process is to upcycle discarded leather.
How would you define what you do?
I design and make exclusive and luxury handbags and accessories. I work on my own collection, as well as create prototypes for third parties. What I enjoy most is the one-of-a-kind commissions by private clients, as I closely collaborate with them. Witnessing their joy when they receive their order is the most memorable moment for me.
