What is your educational background?
I have an MFA in visual communication from Konstfack, a BA in illustration and graphic design, a BFA in illustration and interactive media from California College of The Arts and I studied picture book storytelling at HDK Valand Göteborgs Universitet and animation at Konstfack.
What are your sources of inspiration?
I often draw inspiration from the world created by Tove Jansson, the Finnish Swedish artist behind the Moomins. Her ability to craft a whimsical, detailed universe is incredibly inspiring. Additionally, my extensive travels enrich my creative expression, blending diverse cultural elements.
What was a memorable moment in your professional life?
In 2024, I illustrated a library bus while grieving my grandmother's passing. The project featured butterflies symbolising rebirth, and it helped me process my loss. At the inauguration, I dedicated the artwork to her and shared the story, making it a deeply meaningful experience.
What would you suggest to person just starting out?
Commit 100%. There will be moments of doubt, especially during quiet periods. Focus on your passions and create your own opportunities. Stay true to yourself, even if trends tempt you to change. Trust that your authenticity will attract the right opportunities.
Ishtar Bäcklund Dakhil is a rising star: she began her career in 2017 and she started teaching in 2020
