Danish glass artist Tobias Møhl has spent decades translating the decorative traditions of Venetian cane glass into a distinctly Scandinavian visual language. Drawing on his training at Holmegaard Glasværk and his apprenticeship within the Venetian lineage, including formative exchanges with maestro Lino Tagliapietra, Tobias works with the demanding techniques of filigrana, murrine and reticello. His glass forms, marked by delicate networks of canes suspended within the material, move fluidly between drawing, weaving and sculpture, stripping away excess in favour of clarity, balance and subtlety. “I am not into colourful, complex and loud work, but rather interested in creating something that can be so simple and yet so perfect,” explains Tobias.

Not much is improvised. Unlike ceramics where you can step back and change course during the making, glassmaking requires that you follow a plan precisely to be successful. Once the process starts you have to finish. Glassblowing can be intense because of this.
Glassblowing is an incredibly technical craft that is a lot like practising a sport in the sense that it is about training, training, training. Glass is a difficult material. I have now developed a style where I am applying traditional techniques yet making them my own.
I think a lot about how I am always striving in my work. I believe if you are really searching for perfection you will never be truly satisfied. I always wish for more time, or how I could have developed a piece differently, or made this or that change to make a form more refined.
It can be almost impossible to break away from tradition and you can get caught up in the techniques. Though I am using very similar tools and techniques as those that were used more than 300 years ago, I always keep my eyes open for details that can be changed.
