In 2020, The Real Crystal Birch became the sole titleholder of what was known as The Hat Factory in 2020. Established in 1936, the atelier flourished as a bespoke millinery, furnishing local stores and franchises throughout South Africa. In the 1990s, the craft landscape was significantly disrupted as retailers switched to mass production abroad, leaving many workshops without buyers.

Flash forward to today, The Real Crystal Birch atelier continues to grapple with promoting the value of bespoke millinery. More and more, local clientèle have a greater appreciation for handmade objects, locally sourced goods and the powerful choice behind every craft purchase. The atelier now boasts a collection of over 100 steel and wood blocks, and a name that is both well known and sought out.
