Back to basics

  • Sylvain creates ceramics for Michelin-starred chefs
  • At the age of 34, he changed careers to become a ceramicist
  • He founded Atelier amphotère in 2020

Originally from the north of France, Sylvain Lequenne worked for several years in the field of environmental protection before reconverting to ceramics in 2016 at the age of 34, after three years of training at the CNIFOP in Burgundy. He immediately felt in harmony with the material and was seduced by the infinite possibilities of decorating and glaze firing his pieces with mixed sandstones. Atelier amphotère was launched shortly after in February 2020 and now enjoys a solid reputation working with clients such as French Michelin-starred chef, Sylvain Guillemot, won over by Lequenne’s creations. His work is part of an instinctive approach whose inspiration is rooted in nature and the primitive arts, albeit showcasing a contemporary twist.

What is the most thrilling thing about being a ceramicist?
The raw material and its transformation by fire as well as the great diversity of stages involved, which do not allow boredom and routine. I also love to participate in ceramic events to meet colleagues and especially the public.
What do people normally not know about your work?
People don't know that I'm the king of naps. I don't sleep much at night, but I take many naps. This is an asset, because earth is a material that requires a time of rest and drying between the different steps.
What do you consider is "well made"?
In my opinion, “well made” relates to the technical mastery involved at all stages of the creation process. I also believe that creation must generate emotion, novelty and call for contemplation and the desire to take an object into one’s hands.
Is ceramics trendy at the moment?
The future of ceramics seems promising to me if one can adapt to the ever-changing trends and fashions. It is important to quickly find the clientele and networks associated with your artistic universe. While this takes time, it is essential to ensure the continuity of the craft.
