Porcelain with poetic petals
- Sandrine's self-taught porcelain practice is a slow expression of nature
- Delicate floral sculpture is a defining feature of her work
- To her, crafts can only thrive when they are shared with others
Fascinated by the translucency of porcelain and the soft light it creates, Sandrine Tortikian makes lamps, tableware, decorative objects and sculptures characterised by organic forms and refined details. "I did not seek this craft, it found its way to me,” she says. Largely self-taught, Sandrine developed an intuitive approach to porcelain, shaped by experimentation and a deep sensitivity to the material’s intrinsic qualities. Nature, emotions and moments of everyday life all spark her imagination. At the heart of her practice lies the desire to bring the material to life. "Transforming porcelain into objects that carry emotion is a constant source of wonder," Sandrine explains. Her creations reflect the deep connection that binds humans to nature.

INTERVIEW
My journey started with the desire to create and let go during a painful turning point in my life. I discovered humble and demanding clay, a material capable of holding the imprint of a gesture and an emotion. Working with it means accepting the unexpected, starting over and learning to trust yourself.
A few years ago, my studio's kiln burned down. The wait for a replacement was several months, so I turned to floral sculpture to keep my hands and mind busy. What began as a temporary fix quickly became my true path.
Ceramics can never be fully controlled. Each stage requires time, patience and precision, and the firing process always carries an element of unpredictability. Experimentation and failures are integral to my work. Over time, I have learned to see them not as obstacles, but as opportunities to learn and develop my practice.
I want to remind people that objects can have a soul. In a world where everything is moving fast, I choose to create slowly. I make pieces that invite viewers to take some time, rediscover the beauty of simple things and reconnect with everyday gestures that are often forgotten.
