Wood marquetry

The interplay of time and tradition
Sampigé & Co is a Mysore-based craft atelier founded by Meghana Shekar. The studio’s work is rooted in the tradition of Indian wood inlay and takes a contemporary and collaborative design approach to the practice. Working primarily with locally sourced and reclaimed materials, the team of master inlay artisans focuses on precision, material sensitivity and detail. Artisans have honed their skills through years of practice and apprenticeship. Pieces are largely hand cut and carefully assembled, reflecting both the discipline of the craft and the individuality of the makers.
The studio values the natural diversity of wood in colour, grain and character as an integral part of the creative process. Artisans, whose skills have been developed through years of apprenticeship and practice, create surfaces of precision and depth, guided by principles of slow design, sustainability, and cultural continuity. For Homo Faber 2026, Sampigé & Co. presents Mehfil, a collaborative work created with Italian artist Gaia Cairo and Mumbai-based furniture maker Chacko, exploring themes of biodiversity, shared heritage and craftsmanship through the language of Indian wood inlay.
