Paper art

London, United Kingdom

The gift of paper

  • Samantha's paper art emphasises meticulous hand finishing
  • She believes that creativity thrives in collaboration
  • She co-founded the Paper Artist Collective in 2015

Samantha Quinn is constantly testing the boundaries of paper and experimenting with the medium. However, paper art has not always been her goal. After graduating from Falmouth University with a degree in graphic design and relocating from Cornwall to London, Samantha wanted to gift family and friends beautiful objects of her own creation. "As a graphic designer, I am comfortable with using a scalpel and making mock-ups. Paper was economically the best option," she says. Today, Samantha specialises in paper cutting, sculpting, illustrating and 3D large-scale projects. From the windows of Fossil to Aquascutum, Chopard, Tiffany & Co. and Selfridges, her paper artworks have been objects of wonder for London shoppers and passersby.

Samantha Quinn is an expert artisan: she began her career in 2010.

INTERVIEW

I started my paper art practice in 2010. I had just graduated university, and with limited income, I was looking to make gifts for family and friends. I had a scalpel from making mock-ups as a graphic designer, and paper was available at a low cost.

I problem solve creatively using paper as my medium. I begin with researching and sketching before using the scalpel on paper. My work spans window installations, sets for photo shoots and private commissions. The themes and application of my work vary wildly, depending on the client and end purpose.

Yes. I run a community of paper artists called the Paper Artist Collective and try to support other paper artists when I can through networking and connections.

In 2015, fellow paper artist Kristine Braanen and I founded The Paper Artist Collective, a global community of paper artists. The collective brings together almost 100 artists from over 25 countries, and invites them to collaborate, discuss, exhibit and share their creative practices. While each artist has a distinct approach, we are all united by a shared focus on paper as our primary medium.
