Life between the folds

  • Klaudia turns her love of books into paper art
  • She draws inspiration from nature, art and life
  • Her self-taught journey taught her patience and resilience

Paper has always played a central role in Klaudia Moosbrugger’s life, as for nearly 20 years, she was surrounded by books as a librarian. She folded animals in origami workshops for children at the library, crafted paper decorations for the space, and discovered the joy hidden in a single sheet of paper. “At that time, books were still my focus, but paper as a craft gradually began to capture my heart,” Klaudia says. “I often wonder how learning directly from a great origami artist such as Tomoko Fuse, whose books inspired me to tackle even the most intricate folds, would have changed my practice. However, teaching myself shaped me in its own way,” she explains. Every project became a lesson in patience, every challenge an exercise in perseverance. “This quiet, self-taught path gave me a depth and endurance that I could not have earned from formal instruction,” Klaudia says.

What was your stepping stone into craftsmanship?
My journey began when I was gifted a folder filled with beautiful paper. I looked for a way to create something special with it. I created diamond-shaped ornaments that I had seen online – I was thrilled by what a single sheet of paper could become.
What are your sources of inspiration?
I study real blossoms, buds and leaves to spark creativity. Nature guides me whether I craft lifelike or fantasy flowers. Origami books, the web and everyday life inspire my folds. My wide paper collection fuels ideas and allows customers to choose their own unique creations.
Do you collaborate with other artists?
I collaborate with a painter whose works often show women in traditional Bregenzerwald costumes. The juppe, a skirt with about 500 pleats, connects beautifully to my folding art. We hold exhibitions together – I once turned one of her paintings into a unique lampshade.
What life lesson have you learned through your craft?
Nothing is achieved by skipping steps. Every successful project begins with focus and unfolds patiently, step by step, until it is completed.
