Reflection, identity and light
Sali Anen's multi-dimensional installations ask viewers what it really means to see yourself. Through mirrors, light and reflective surfaces, she creates environments in which perception becomes unstable and identity appears fluid. Based in Luxembourg, her practice investigates unconventional ways of approaching existence, vanity and the complex relationship between the individual and society. Sali’s installations create an immersive and dynamic experience, triggered and reshaped by the viewer’s movement.
In this piece, chosen for Homo Faber 2026, an intimate experience becomes a moment of wonder. With a slightly curved PMMA surface that stretches and bends the reflection, Once Upon a Time reveals the viewer as taller, slimmer or subtly altered. The mirror’s chromed surface, applied in layers over a wooden frame, merges technical precision with poetic distortion. For the viewer, identity becomes fluid, and seeing one's self feels both familiar and enchantingly strange.
