Rian Kanduth

Gilder

Traditional gilding

  • Rian's craft skills are considered endangered
  • She masters around 18 restoration techniques
  • She passes on her knowledge to students

Master gilder Rian Kanduth works with more than 18 techniques: water gilding, gesso, punchwork, oil gilding, verré eglomisé, japanning, penwork, coromandel, gesso cutting, sgraffito, pastiglia, patina, and many more. Rian opened her first workshop in London in 1995. She trained as a gilder in a well recognised London frame making atelier and afterwards she studied Conservation & Restoration at the City & Guilds of London Art School. Her first commission was a hand carved Welsh slate recessed into an oak surround with Trajan letter cutting and gilding for The National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Society. Her love for teaching and passing on her knowledge is evident from the success of her apprentices, many of whom have careers in the field of decorative arts.

Could your craft be considered in danger?
My craft skills are considered to be ‘at risk’ as sadly they are now endangered, some of which are included on the Radcliffe Red List of Endangered Crafts. I feel it a privilege to pass on my knowledge to those who wish to learn the craft for the generations to come.
What do you love most about your profession?
I love the undertaking high end projects in my home country but also internationally. My work has taken me to places around the world which I would have never seen otherwise.
What are your most peculiar skills?
Patience, focus, concentration, fine motor skills, these are crucial requirements. The intricacy of my craft whilst working on such prestigious historical and iconic buildings is palpable.
What do you suggest to aspiring restorers?
Learn from everyone, be strong and take criticism well. It is imperative to learn your materials and tools well, to investigate and respect your object, and indeed: practice, practice, practice.
Rian Kanduth is a master artisan: she began her career in 1988 and she started teaching in 2012
