Harmony of light and colour
- Anastasya is a multidisciplinary craftswoman
- She focuses on her passion for gilding
- Her art aims for calmness, radiance and peacefulness
Trained woodcarver and gilder Anastasya Martynova works with private clients, interior designers and architects, proving that her area of expertise is as diverse as her interests. Having previously worked in set design and art directing, she combines all aspects of her background to bring a holistic eye to her masterful pieces, which mesmerise with their complexity and colours. The use of blue in her work is linked to the sky and the sea, which she describes as the most abstract and mysterious elements of the natural world. Working in the right environment is essential to being productive and fulfilled, she says, and her bright studio at Design District gives her the opportunity to thrive and see her work in the light.

INTERVIEW
I craved the need to do something more lasting and more connected to making, using hand tools and techniques rooted in the ceremony of process. I realised the impact of creating with your hands and the meaning it brings, as well as the magic of the age-old technique of gilding.
I am becoming increasingly interested in how art and science can be combined, as I see parallels between the obsession with detail and level of discipline of both craftspeople and scientists. I see room for exciting outcomes from potential collaborations.
I wish to explore the relationship with light within a space in a contemporary and innovative way. I want my work to contribute to creating a more inspiring environment for others as I believe this has a huge impact on our wellbeing, productivity and contentment.
I think quite often people are surprised that I physically make the work, not just design it. Since gilding is on the endangered list of crafts in the UK, I would like to inspire the next generation of gilders to keep this wonderful craft alive.
