Driaan Claassen founded Reticence Studio in 2015, where he and his team create sculptural objects using a wide range of materials, including steel, wood and ceramic. Building on a childhood fascination and appreciation for materiality and making, Driaan develops innovative processes from scratch. This allows for a deep understanding of the nuances, constraints, tolerances and breadth of a material or technique’s ability and expression.
Reticence Studio seeks to challenge gender stereotypes in certain crafts. For example, the workshop reframes expectations and perceptions of crochet and knitting, by approaching them from a masculine point of view. "My team and I hope to peak the interest in knitting and crochet across all genders as they are beautiful mediums, and bring a textural twist to our works," says Driaan.
