Blacksmithing beyond the forge
- Reinis trained in the traditional school of blacksmithing
- He finds his peace and balance in his forge
- He works on a wide array of projects that require different blacksmithing techniques
Reinis Pētersons spent his childhood experimenting with tools in his house's shed. "As a teenager, I saw a blacksmithing demonstration at a craft fair in the ethnographic museum. I was immediately drawn to the craft, and I knew then and there that I wanted to pursue it," he says. "I visited the museum three years in a row for a chance to forge at the fair." In 2006, Reinis joined Auseklis, an open craft studio, where he learned blacksmithing techniques from a number of masters. He finished his apprenticeship in 2013. Reinis received a master blacksmith diploma from the Latvian Chamber of Crafts in 2017, and spent two years teaching at Auseklis. Today, in his independent studio, he creates a wide range of objects, including jewellery, accessories, TV set props and knives.
INTERVIEW
On my initial visits to museum demonstrations, I learned how to forge a knife. The master gave me a safe environment to experiment and learn by myself. I started with a piece of rebar and forged a very simple rat-tail knife. It was all crooked, but it was my first knife.
This aspect of my practice is rooted in my spirituality and the technical skills I developed during my apprenticeship. I was focused on moving the metal in different challenging ways. My master stressed the importance of details, precision, originality and authenticity. My pieces are inspired by music and philosophy, a major I studied for 3 years.
When I am in the middle of a complicated job or a great challenge, I like to go back to simple things to find my peace. I love forging nails, they are the perfect balance between skill, time consumption and financial return.
I try not to follow trends. If I stick with tradition, I will always have work to do. In the restoration aspect of the practice, quality is above all. With patience and quality, I will always find clients who will value my work.
