Nature exquisitely captured in imaginative illustrations

  • Raoul specialises in making fictive illustrations inspired by animals and nature
  • His pieces capture the finest details in watercolours and acrylics
  • He depicts imaginary animals on a dreamed-up, undiscovered continent through his illustrations

Raoul Deleo is a Dutch illustrator whose love for drawing began in childhood and never faded. He first studied graphic design where he was recognised for his talent and encouraged by his mentor to pursue illustration. This led him to the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. Raoul's independent career began in 1993 and gained early recognition with the NIC Annual Illustration Award in 1995. Known for his imaginative depictions of animal life, he blends traditional techniques with imaginative storytelling. “I try to bring people very close to nature by drawing animals that captivate the viewer's attention because they see something unexpected. The detail of the illustration becomes apparent once they look at it closely," Raoul says. His award-winning book, Terra Ultima, captures this essence, showcasing fictitious wildlife in masterfully rendered illustrations.

What is your book Terra Ultima about?
Terra Ultima is as imaginary discovery of an unknown continent. The book is a fictional explorer's journey documenting encounters with new animal species through detailed paintings and stories. It was published in 2021 and is available in several languages. It is still mind-blowing to me to realise how well the book was received.
What other works highlight your journey in illustration?
My painting of the Flamingo Fawn was published in a major Dutch newspaper in 2016. A ballet dancer once cried in front of it, as the flamingo’s graceful pose deeply moved her. It was a real compliment to see that my work could generate such emotions.
What does well-made mean to you?
Posture, composition and colour are all very important to the whole meaning. I am currently working on a large painting, and it is a challenge to get the posture, colours and details right. I am always trying to find the right balance between all those aspects.
What do you hope the future has in store for you?
I hope to continue creating new artworks with passion and love, maintaining the same drive and urge I have had over the years. For me, keeping that passion alive is most important, as the creation process is the time I enjoy the most.
