Exploring the versatility of leather

  • Peter creates original leather pieces and restores antique heirlooms
  • He preserves heritage techniques by using traditional tools
  • His work has been displayed at the National Army Museum in London

Fascinated by the versatility of the material, Peter Smith started leatherworking as a hobby. "When I bought a motorcycle, I customised its saddle with hand tooled leather," he shares. This was the start of a passion that led Peter to become a maker of unique leather pieces, and a restorer who brings back to life beloved family heirlooms. He works with traditional skills and tools to keep heritage knowledge alive, and develops his own methods for dyeing and colouring leather. Peter's practice encompasses a multitude of techniques, including saddle stitching, cutting, pattern making, etching, hand tooling, embossing and braiding. In his workshop, PS Leather Craft UK, he focuses on the creation of bespoke, made-to-order articles, the preservation of leather and the repair of antique articles.

Peter Smith is an expert artisan: he began his career in 2012

INTERVIEW

I started my practice in 2012 as a hobby. The first piece I made was a saddle for my motorcycle, which led me to create a bespoke saddle for a friend. Upon seeing the piece, a member of the Harley Davidson family said 'the work is the best testament to my father’s work I have seen.'

Since opening my workshop in 2020, I have come to believe that innovation is essential for making. I design so that my work is bespoke and the result of my own creativity and intuition, steering clear from copying other people’s creations. In my restoration work, I focus on reverse engineering original features.

I am both a maker and a restorer of antique, family heirloom pieces. The demand in this niche area encouraged me to delve into it.

My practice is strongly linked to historic periods and cultures. I am lucky to have clients around the world who commission my bespoke pieces and with whom I build a rapport. Their visions inspire me to deliver my own interpretation.
