Life with luscious greens

  • Paola makes botanical wall art that brings the outdoors to interior spaces
  • She works with rich green hues and different textures
  • Her large-scale pieces, composed of hand placed filaments, are reminiscent of topographic terrains

Paola Di Legge’s contemporary practice combines botanical materials such as moss and small plants to create lush green compositions. After working in the corporate world, Paola felt disconnected from nature and enrolled in a floral design course, worked with moss and became fascinated by the material. She started making works to hang in her new home and noticed the positive effect that living with natural materials had on her and her family. “Being surrounded by these natural works was grounding and transformational. I wanted to share this experience with others,” she says. Paola sees her pieces not as simple decorations, but as spatial interventions designed to elevate human wellbeing.

Paola Di Legge is a rising star: she began her career in 2018.

INTERVIEW

I start with a plan and a sketched composition, but it often changes during the creative process. Bringing the idea to life unfolds slowly: I select the right materials, respecting their natural textures, and then choose where they are best suited to be placed to create harmony.

Eco-friendly materials are my top priority. After experimenting with many different sources, I now rely on a few trusted suppliers who consistently deliver the exact colours and textures I need for my designs.

My series Ageing with Grace, crafted from raw bark and moss, explores the passage of time and the beauty of imperfection. Recently, I began including narratives in my work, and seeing viewers connect more deeply with these pieces has been very rewarding.

I received a Future Makers Award from the Design & Crafts Council Ireland and exhibited my work at Collect. I believe it was the first time this type of material was showcased at the exhibition. It was great to see positive responses from people on an international stage.
