The delicate art of pressed flower composition

  • Anastasia creates pressed flower collages using graphic design and natural materials
  • She personally collects and dries all her plants in a traditional way
  • She repeatedly wins international pressed Flower Art competitions in Japan, South Korea and the USA

Anastasia Kovaleva was introduced to the world of botanical art by a beloved teacher. Throughout her school years, she attended floral design courses as an extracurricular activity. Over time, this passion evolved into a desire to share this art with a broader audience. Despite pursuing a career in commerce, she eventually graduated from the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Art and Design in Wrocław, Poland, and from that moment became a full-time artist. In her work, Anastasia uses pressed flowers, foliage, and other natural materials that she finds in woodlands, by roadsides, and in gardens of Poland. Through her art, she wishes to inspire a deeper appreciation for the diversity and beauty of flowers.

What made you choose this profession?
Passion for art and nature led me to become a pressed flower artist. I find immense joy in the process of collecting and preserving delicate blooms, transforming them into timeless pieces of art. I like to inspire people to reconnect with nature.
How do you express tradition and innovation in your work?
I use a special press for drying my flowers, but still prefer the traditional method of drying plants between the pages of old books. I blend the traditional Japanese craft of Oshibana with contemporary collage artistry, all while remaining deeply connected to nature.
Was there a memorable moment in your professional life?
A memorable moment was when I received a heartfelt letter from a client expressing how my pressed flower artwork brought comfort and joy during a difficult time in his life. Knowing that my art could make a positive impact was incredibly rewarding.
What do you suggest to a young artisan who wants to follow a similar path to you?
Creating pressed flower art is a time-consuming process, taking three to five weeks from collection to artwork. The main thing is to be patient, accurate and delicate with flowers. Hunting for new material is an integral part of my creative process, too.
