Partners in life and in the studio, Oleksandr Barabanov and Halyna Kanyuka hold degrees in history and marketing respectively. United by their love of ceramics, in 2017 they decided to start a studio in Kyiv and entirely devote their lives to this ancient craft. When asked about their profession, they say that it’s all about “finding new expressions of clay and filling the space with beauty”. The artisan duo are not shy to experiment with forms and techniques. SaGa Pottery’s objects boast uneven, rough edges, flaming, bold glazes and a strong sense of interior aesthetics. Oleksandr and Halyna’s ceramics are very popular among craft connoisseurs in Ukraine and abroad and are regularly featured in fairs and exhibitions.

Why did you choose ceramics?
Halyna: Opening the kiln is the most amazing moment. Looking at new incredible combinations of colours, enjoying the fire patterns of the raku technique, admiring each finished piece – all this is worth the effort and time invested.
How did you actually start this craft?
Oleksandr: My background was in the field of sales, fashion and design. Halyna’s was in the field of marketing. We studied with master ceramicist Olena Vorozhbit for a few years and, finally, in 2017 decided to start our own studio. It was a lot of work to become known in the beginning: exhibitions, markets, new acquaintances, interviews and master classes.
What are your primary sources of inspiration?
Halyna: The beauty of nature, it energizes and fascinates. Travelling to different countries, getting to know ceramicists all over the world, communication – all of it is a driving force. We always try to collect unique ceramics from different countries we visit.
Is the ceramic craft in danger of extinction?
Oleksandr: We don’t think so. Every year there are new ceramicists, a new generation with a new style and expression. Handmade ceramics has become a global trend, more and more people are interested in these exceptional products.
