How did your ceramics journey begin?
I fell in love with ceramics when I started studying at the State Institute of Decorative and Applied Arts. Then I worked with ceramic and glass artists in experimental ceramic studios in Lviv, until I opened my own workshop in 1980.
Why did you choose ceramics as your expressive medium?
It’s the perfect combination of craft and art, sculpture and painting. I am interested in ceramics both as an object and as an idea. I am impressed by the beauty and simplicity of traditional ancient ceramics and my works contain references to modern sculpture and architecture.
How do you express your vision?
I try to remain connected with native art forms. Western Ukraine is famous for its ceramic, glass and textile crafts. My use of shape and texture is inspired by nature or my memories, which I transform into artworks.
How important are tradition and innovation to you?
I express both tradition and innovation through the tips of my fingers. Tradition is in my education, and innovation is what I bring to my work every day. It’s part of my life, and the one thing I love about this craft is the freedom to create.

Ihor Kovalevych is a master artisan: he began his career in 1975 and he started teaching in 1970
