Metallic metamorphosis

  • Misun works with the traditional keum-boo fusing technique
  • Her 3D jewellery uses playful, patchworked circles found in jogakbo
  • Her pieces are usually created from a single sheet of silver or gold

Misun Won creates contemporary jewellery inspired by South Korean tradition. Born in Seoul, she finished her BA in fine arts in South Korea before moving to the UK and enrolling in a master's degree at the Edinburgh College of Art. "This international background allowed me to bring a fresh approach to my creative practice,” Misun says. While her objects are deeply rooted in her culture and heritage, they still explore new contexts through an innovative, hands-on way of making. Jogakbo, the traditional Korean patchwork cloth, and keum-boo, an ancient Korean fusing technique, define Misun's practice. Working with a single sheet of gold and silver, she translates these concepts into her work, using simple units and repetitive patterns.

How would you define what you do?
I explore simplicity, structure and the transformation of flat metal into sculptural forms. Keum-boo is one of the key techniques I work with, particularly for silver pieces. I use it to emphasise pattern and create dynamic structures and rhythm.
What aspect of your craft tends to surprise people?
It is how much can emerge from something so simple, such as a single flat sheet of metal. Many are amazed that by hand piercing, folding and layering, I can create jewellery that feels 3D, dynamic and almost sculptural.
What was the first object you made?
The first object I made was a pendant featuring a simple, patterned design combined with colourful Korean fabric and braided cord. I then developed this idea further, creating a small collection of pendants and brooches.
Do you have any advice for aspiring jewellery makers?
Embrace patience and curiosity above all. Take time to explore and discover your own style and the methods that feel right for you. Do not be afraid to try new things: experimentation is key to naturally finding your own way in this craft.
