Boundless imagination

  • Marta’s passion for textiles comes from her grandmother
  • She uses her academic and practical knowledge to explore further
  • Her hand-printed pieces tell unique stories

Marta Afonso’s special connection to textiles comes from her grandmother who taught her how to sew. While studying textile design to a post-graduate level she took practical courses in pattern making and garment sewing. It was natural to open her workshop in 2015 to creatively use her knowledge to find her own expression. A trip to India influenced her direction. “I learned the rare block printing technique from a few local artisans and use it in my work with other manual methods such as stencil printing or painting directly onto fabric.” Marta’s hands are creating from the initial drawing all the way to the manual pressure applied to the textile. Sensitive to transmission, she runs workshops to show how fabric can be a canvas for boundless imagination.

When did you know you would dedicate yourself to manual textile printing?
During some practical courses, I felt I did not have the space to express myself so I decided to try manual textile printing. My first experience was a simple paper stencil and sponge. I have not stopped since then.
Where do you source your textiles?
I live in the area of Porto and as Northern Portugal is an important textile industry hub, I physically go to the fabric manufacturers to collect unused textiles and create partnerships with other craftsmen.
What are your sources of inspiration?
I love to draw and it is an essential part in all my projects. I am very attached to nature and every day I go for long walks with my dog in the forest or by the beach. I usually collect dried leaves, flowers, seeds or just record them with my mobile phone.
How do you innovate using ancestral techniques?
While keeping traditional manual techniques alive, it is important to introduce modern tools if it makes sense. For instance, digitally cutting moulds contributes to reducing material waste which is better from a sustainability perspective.
Marta Afonso is a master artisan: she began her career in 2015 and she started teaching in 2017
