Lighting up everyday life

  • Marion finds inspiration in objects with ritualistic uses
  • She has received some prestigious awards
  • She loves using different expertise

Marion Mezenge creates timeless interior objects based on observation and experience. She unveils a unique story with each light that she designs and makes. Marion graduated as an art turner from the Ecole Boulle. Her sensitivity towards materials led her to develop a particular know-know for the machine processing of non-ferrous metals: brass, bronze, copper, or aluminium. She works her pieces on the lathe and then uses patination or chasing to finish them. Through a contrast of textures, her creations subtly reveal the beauty of the material. Before devoting herself to her own practice, Marion refined her skills working in Parisian workshops specialised in the manufacture of high-end lighting.

When and how did you actually start?
After graduating I worked for companies specialising in high-end lighting for architects and designers. In parallel, I co-founded the Edward Tisson association, a collective and multidisciplinary workshop where art and design converge.
What are your main sources of inspiration?
My inspirations are closely linked to what amazes me and provokes an emotion. Having a visual and tactile memory, my brain archives colours, textures, readings and objects, creating little by little a universe.
How do you relate to tradition and innovation?
I appreciate old objects, their forms, their uses, and their stories. I like to add an extra emotional charge to it. The Astérie collection bears witness to this: each reflector tells a story, plunges us into the darkness, dramatises our living spaces and invites us to escape from everyday life.
What defines a "well made" object to you?
Perfection down to the smallest detail, from the design and manufacture to the use of the product. But it also means to favour dismountable assemblies so that the object can be repaired and last over time.
