A golden touch to marbled porcelain

  • Madara's porcelain creations are mainly inspired by the Latvian landscape
  • She shares her knowledge with students in more than 200 masterclasses a year
  • For her, imperfection is an important sign of a handmade piece

Madara Rozentāle's relationship with clay started when she was a child shaping soil on a lakeshore and drying bowls in the sun. Those early moments evolved into a lifelong practice, leading her to the Riga School of Design and Art and the Art Academy of Latvia, where she earned her master's degree. Today, Madara runs her own studio in Riga, where she transforms raw clay into delicate jewellery and functional and decorative art pieces. Heavily influenced by nature, her work features marble patterns and hand painted golden details. “I create pieces that feel both ancient and modern, keeping the whimsical vibe of my childhood alive for a new generation,” Madara explains.

Madara Rozentāle is an expert artisan: she began her career in 2016.

INTERVIEW

During a student fair, the jewellery pieces I was exhibiting sold out, which encouraged me to pursue this speciality. While jewellery is my main daily focus, making vessels remains a true passion that I always return to.

My process starts with a spark from nature or architecture, followed by sketching. Firing at 1260°C is unpredictable, as pieces shrink and colours shift. Once the prototype is ready, I produce batches and finish the process by taking photos of the final results.

Ten years of art and design studies provided a strong foundation for my brand and studio. Beyond talent, the secret is a genuine love for the craft. It often feels like I am simply having a great time and making a living by doing what I truly dream of.

Direct links with traditional Latvian pottery are rare, as I use porcelain, electric kilns and precious metal finishes like gold. The primary connection is the inspiration I gather from Latvian nature. I translate the quiet beauty of our landscapes into a modern, experimental aesthetic.
