Uninhibited expression through illustration
- Ly expresses her emotions through drawing and illustration
- Being in a state of flow is freeing and meditative to her
- Her studio gives children a safe space to express themselves
Almost a visual journal of everyday life, Ly Yeow’s practice is a free and peaceful space for self-expression. This safe space is also one that she devotes her time guiding children to explore since founding her studio in 2017. Evoking the curious wonders in nature, Ly's whimsical creations blend self-taught skills with whatever feels right in the moment, from watercolours, colour pencils and acrylic markers to resin, clay, embroidery and even found objects. Compared to a fully polished and flawlessly rendered piece, she is moved by the rawness of drawings and carefree illustrations in children’s books. “These creations can be so simple but still tell so many stories. They can carry a lot of weight and emotions in them," Ly says.

INTERVIEW
There is a lot of beauty to be found in the creations of people who draw without any inhibitions. When we are young, we draw without holding back. Once we learn the rules, drawing becomes less free. Through my art and teaching practice, I hope people are able to express their voices on paper and be seen.
I am drawn towards looseness and rawness. As a perfectionist, I cannot allow a loose stroke to look unfinished, but in reality, it can be finished in its own ways. Colour pencil is a medium that I really love, and I hope to become looser with its usage in time.
I do not give out erasers. I have my students start with markers as I want them to embrace their drawings and accept there are no mistakes. The way I teach is not instructional. I allow kids to have the freedom to come up with their own voices and be respected.
They can learn everything. The funny thing about growing up is we feel like we are ready to learn a lot of things. But once we grow up, there is equally a lot of unlearning to do. Kids are simply present. I think that is the ultimate lesson we can learn from them: to be present in every moment.
