Housing San Francisco's plaster patterns
Lorna Kollmeyer's atelier was founded in 1983, when she bought a small ornamental plaster business in San Francisco. Initially, the work focused on producing ceiling medallions for a local hardware store, but the practice expanded to include moulds and cast elements for architectural façades. One of atelier Lorna Kollmeyer's first major projects was the restoration of Hotel Majestic. All the missing ornaments were sculpted from scratch based on historical society photographs. As the last ornamental plaster atelier in San Francisco, it houses the only existing collection of the city’s original plaster ornament patterns.
Today, atelier Lorna Kollmeyer specialises in moulded and cast plaster ornament, producing medallions, brackets and façade details. Its work remains rooted in the traditional techniques that shaped San Francisco’s Victorian architecture. Artisans work with durable materials such as flexible rubber moulds and high-strength gypsum cements. In addition to restoration, atelier Lorna Kollmeyer develops custom designs for non-historic projects, and works with 3D technologies to adapt and reproduce elements.
