The joy of sharing emotions visually

  • Lidia loves to blend natural materials and colours to produce her murals
  • Testing new techniques is a central part of her practice
  • She originally trained as an art teacher

Passion for art and creativity have guided Lidia Scalzo's life and professional choices. Born in Reggio Calabria, she studied to be an art teacher in Rome, and worked in several art workshops where she learned many different techniques. In 1985, she opened her first workshop in Rome, and in 2010 she moved to Vetralla, in the Tuscia area, to establish her current studio. In this large space, Lidia loves to share projects with other artists and apprentices. “Tuscia, land of the Etruscans, gave me the opportunity to learn many new things and continues to inspire me because it is rich in art and craftsmanship,” she says. Using natural materials and colours, she creates murals and wall panels to customise environments. Lidia especially loves working on artefacts ruined by time, in an effort to give them a new life.

What do you love most about your profession?
My activity gives me the opportunity to give shape to ideas and emotions, always exploring new ways of expressing them. Interacting with people also motivates me. I like to make beauty tangible and to share it with others.
What are your sources of inspiration?
I am curious and I am a keen observer of my surroundings, be it a tree, a painting, the sky, a stone. Everything that strikes me becomes a cue to reinterpret reality and express my creativity.
How do you combine tradition and innovation?
In my work, tradition and innovation blend perfectly. I use traditional techniques or handcrafted materials, while also testing new materials, such as resin fillers or microcements. For me, innovation is crucial in the design and aesthetic approach.
What aspect of your work are people likely to be surprised by?
My activity requires physical effort that is often behind the scenes, such as the preparation of materials and the continuous search for new elements to improve a project. Each work also requires a deep understanding of the client’s needs and desires, because every work has a strong impact in everyday life.
