Karl Mazlo

Jewellery maker

Forging intimate connections

  • Karl's craft is a dialogue between thought, tools and the material
  • He leaves room for the unexpected, fostering authenticity
  • He is influenced by Japanese philosophy and techniques

Raised in a family of artists, Karl Mazlo began creating jewellery at the age of five, copying his jeweller father. He feels lucky to have grown up within such a richly creative and artistic world. “My work is a reflection of my mother’s sensitivity, my father’s creativity, and the thoroughness of my training,” he says. Karl is deeply interested in Japan and Japanese artistry. He was artist-in-residence at Kyoto’s Villa Kujoyama in 2016. Much of his work reflects this thoughtful appreciation for the land of the rising sun: “I was able to meet with Kunihiko Moriguchi, a National Living Treasure; that meeting re-centered my creative process, inspiring me on a new artistic path.”

What brought you to jewellery design?
More than a profession, what I really chose was a medium – metal. I enjoy working with jewels but what really motivates me is creating something from a drawing, or words, from a thought or a memory. Designing jewellery involves a broad palette of techniques, of art.
How is your craft connected to the notion of territory?
I’m inspired by the places I live and work. Encounters with others nourish my research. I have a very strong connection to my everyday landscape, especially France’s rich history and art. I also work to weave cultural connections between France and Japan.
What do you love best about your work?
The intimate connection created with someone who comes to see me for a custom-made design. Starting with a thought and translating it into something concrete. To see a person dreaming in front of a piece of jewellery.
How would you define what you do?
I translate thought and memory into matter. I approach both gems and designs in such a way as to awaken the viewer’s imagination, granting an opportunity to travel within the heart of the material. I work to make people aware of a new vision of jewellery.
