Subtleties of contemporary and classical sculptures

  • José Francisco specialises in making sacral and modern sculptures in Seville
  • He created a sculpture of Deadpool as the award for the Jerez International Tattoo Convention
  • In 2024, he received the silver medal from the French Academic Society of Arts, Sciences and Literature in Paris

José Francisco Blasco Rivero’s works are driven by his keen eye for the subtleties of expression. His high sensitivity to soft forms adds a soothing quality to his religious art and sets his work apart. José Francisco majored in sculpture and graduated with honours from School of Arts of Seville at the age of 21. He received an honorary diploma from the Academy of Santa Isabel of Hungary in Seville. Most of his works have been commissioned by and devoted to brotherhoods. "Although tradition holds a strong place in my life, I am now venturing into traditional non-clerical sculpture. I am surprised that these works have found resonance abroad – they are opening new artistic avenues for me," José Francisco says. His works received the best sculpture awards from the Paris Press Exhibition and the French Academic Society of Arts, Sciences and Literature in Paris.

How did you transition from sacred art to traditional sculpture?
When I modelled my wife for a portrait, I felt a childlike joy. This piece set me on a new path beyond the sacral art I create. Afterwards, I sculpted a male bust which received awards in Paris in 2024 and 2025. This opened the door to more visibility, creative freedom and dialogue with other artists.
What was your first commission abroad?
It was an Ecce Homo and Dolorosa for Trinity Church in Viterbo in Italy. I was so nervous about their state while shipping them that I delivered them myself. Although art is now handled professionally, I still prefer sea transport over air when possible.
What was the most challenging project you worked on?
During the pandemic, I worked on a hand sculpted, hollowed wooden horse with a Roman rider on a 1:1 scale. It took two years to complete it. The float for this procession required 60 people to carry it.
Are you working on new pieces?
In line with my desire to venture into new areas of exploration, I accepted the challenge of sculpting a superhero as the figure for a tattooing award. I recreated Deadpool, infusing my work with a playful sense of excitement while still being guided by classical techniques.
