Finding new forms for light
Designers Jean and Oliver Pelle met while pursuing their masters in architecture at Yale University. In 2011, the husband and wife duo founded Pelle, an atelier specialising in lighting that fuses biomorphic and geometric forms. One of their earliest designs became a signature, the Bubble Chandelier Collection, comprising dense clusters of glass spheres, often finished with hand painted motifs or abstracted patterns. They now work with a six-person team from a warehouse in Brooklyn to push the boundaries of lighting design.
Their unique pieces incorporate crafts such as paper casting and metalworking to create items inspired as much by architectural principles as by the natural world, from precision-bent aluminium light beams to suspended palm fronds that seem to glow from within. “We define ourselves as designers who leverage new techniques and crafts to execute our ideas,” the duo says. Their Brooklyn space also houses a showroom gallery that hosts regular self-curated exhibitions.
