Idoia Cuesta Alonso

Basketweaver

Immersed in nature

  • Idoia is inspired by the Terras do Miño biosphere reserve, where she lives
  • Her work blends organic materials like willow with textile fibres
  • She uses willow that she grows in her own garden

Idoia Cuesta's 360 degree approach to basketweaving is informed by both her studies in biology and her training in weaving textiles. By combining her deep knowledge of natural fibres with research into the basketry traditions of Galicia, Idoia has created an unconventional style of basketmaking which combines organic materials and natural fibres. Her vision, passion and research have led her to experiment and branch out into interior design and landscapes. She also works in fashion, collaborating with designers to make accessories and prototypes, as well as writing books and participating in international events, among them Milan Design Week in 2019.

Why did you choose this craft?
Basketry is a universal craft that has been handed down from generation to generation. It allows me to stay connected with nature, in harmony with the change of seasons. I started weaving traditional willow baskets, then I investigated incorporating textile fibres like cotton and wool.
Which techniques do you master?
Basketry does not require many tools; what I take pride in is being able to interpret different kinds of designs and execute them in different materials, always searching out the most suitable technique. I knot, weave, crochet and apply traditional basketry techniques using natural fibres.
What does 'well made' mean for you?
My work results from years of effort, curiosity, hard work and experimentation. 'Well made' has much to do with handing down knowledge. It is about the beauty, harmony and soul we put in every piece; it is the feeling of pleasure and achievement in creating a unique piece.
How are you involved in the fashion world?
I create handbags using my interpretation of contemporary basketry, and in 2011 my craft caught the attention of Loewe. Last year I was among the artisans who took part in their 'Loewe Baskets' project during Milan Design Week, where I was asked to weave leather to make a handbag.
