Sá Nogueira Azulejaria was founded in 2001 by master artisan José Sá Nogueira. The atelier is dedicated to making traditional 16th century decorative tiles known as azulejos, a word stemming from the Arabic word Al-zellij. José’s wife Amelia joined him in 2012, and ever since, the couple have been working passionately together to keep this unique Portuguese art alive by blending tradition with modern designs. While José masters the centuries-old techniques, ceramic glazes, high-fire pastes and ceramic moulds, Amelia brings a more creative and artistic side.
Firm believers that knowledge is key to keeping this heritage craft alive, Amelia is currently carrying out historical research on 16th century tiles and is actively involved in communicating more about azulejos in schools, training activities and cultural projects. Located in Caldas da Rainha, a must-see city for ceramic lovers, Sá Nogueira Azulejaria can be visited for a closer look at the collection.
