A lineage in religious wood artistry

Hermanos Caballero’s religious woodcarving atelier was founded in Seville in the late 1800s by Maecé Farfán, a writer, carpenter, embroiderer and artist, who left a long-lasting legacy to Sevillian brotherhoods. Maecé and his son-in-law, Manuel Caballero Sousa, joined in business and established a religious woodcraft workshop that has since endured across four generations. Today, Hermanos Caballero, led by Manuel and Federico Caballero González, welcomes the valuable contribution of Manuel, Daniel, and Sara – the fifth generation of artisans. Together this tight-knit team secures a prosperous present and a promising future as some of Seville’s most sought-after experts in the creation of processional floats.

The atelier thrives as a family’s synchronised effort of artistry, craftsmanship and trusted relations with the city’s brotherhoods. Federico and his nephew, Daniel work on the carpentry and structure building, while Manuel and his son, also named Manuel, work on design, drawing and carving. Their water-coloured baroque designs emerge as three-dimensional relief masterpieces, destined either to adorn sacred spaces or to be carried across cobblestone streets by devoted float bearers. Sara, Federico’s daughter, on the other hand, leads the delicate art of gold-leaf gilding.
