Heide Vanderieck’s journey through jewellery design, millinery, and bird taxidermy eventually led her to the world of haute couture embroidery. Specialising in the intricate Lunéville hook technique, which she learned at the prestigious École Lesage in Paris, her work blends spontaneity with rich craftsmanship. Heide draws inspiration from nature, human form, and her vibrant surroundings in Paris. She combines materials such as vintage beads, fabric scraps and sequins on a base of silk organza, to create pieces that tell a story and can be deeply moving. Her detailed and colourful creations invite viewers to uncover new layers of meaning and beauty with each glance. Heide’s pieces are a reflection of her eclectic personality and creative expression.

Can you recall the first piece you made?
My first piece was a mask I embroidered for dancer Audrey Merilus in a 2020 performance called Dances of Death, choreographed by Michiel Vandevelde. Inspired by death masks, her costume colours and energy, I designed a symmetrical mask to fit her and the piece.
What is the most memorable piece you have produced?
It was a wall artwork—a mourning piece—I made for friends in Lanzarote after they lost their dog Hektor. I used elements of Hektor, the island, and their other dog. It had deep emotional value for them, and I was really happy with the result.
What does well made mean to you?
Well made means understanding techniques deeply enough to play with them freely, without being limited by rules. Technical perfection does not make art interesting. It is more about knowing what you are doing and having fun exploring new ways to use your knowledge and skills.
What do you love most about your work?
I love everything about my craft—the slow pace, the action, the tactile aspects and the freedom to choose each bead, sequin, thread or colour. It almost feels meditative, like creating a landscape while walking through it. I really enjoy the entire process of embroidery.
