Felting

San Candido, Italy

A heritage in felt

Haunold by Zacher has been working with felt in the heart of Puster Valley since 1560. Handed down through generations, the workshop went from a tannery to creating hats, soles and slippers. Even though the Zakher family had to halt its millinery work after WWI, it remained committed to wool processing and felt production.

Today, Haunold by Zacher processes around nine tons of South Tyrolean sheep's wool yearly, contributing to the use of local raw material. The atelier focuses on creating felt slippers with firm soles using a historic hammer fulling machine, in function since 1901. Today, the atelier is run by five siblings who continue the tradition felt production in Italy.
