When function meets story

Gunjan Gupta works at the intersection of craft, culture and contemporary design. In collaboration with master craftspeople, she creates collectible pieces of furniture and art using Indian material traditions. Featured in Phaidon’s book Designed for Life as one of the world’s most influential designers, Gunjan is known for her playful approach to blurring the boundaries between art and design. Her works are held in museum collections at MAD Paris Museum of Decorative Arts, M+ plus in Hong Kong and the Vitra Design Museum in Germany. Gunjan is also the founder of contemporary Indian homeware brand IKKIS.

For Homo Faber 2026, Gunjan presents a sculptural chair and a series of tables that unite and reimagine regional weaving traditions through a contemporary design lens. All pieces were designed by her and crafted by local artisans. The Chattai chair transforms Bengal’s humble handwoven floor mat into a collectible seat. Complementing it, The Pot is 'Her' cane totem pole tables reinterpret the feminine form as a series of stacked functional sculptures that have been handwoven in cane by artisans from Nagaland. Together, the pieces explore how indigenous craft practices can become vehicles for cultural storytelling.
