Sardinian masks, Mediterranean symbolism
- Graziano shapes traditional Sardinian leather masks by hand
- He works by the sea, in the open air at San Giovanni di Sinis
- He uses wooden moulds, spatulas and his father's compass to make his masks
Sardinia-based Graziano Viale crafts leather masks according to the local tradition, with leather and hand tools. His creations range from Phoenician Punic masks to performance masks for the Commedia dell'Arte and Greek theatre, as well as animals, birds and miniatures for decorative purposes. Graziano soaks the leather in hot water and shapes it with his hands and small wooden spatulas on the moulds he has designed and made since the 1980s. "Once the leather has dried, I trim, decorate and colour it," he explains. A qualified dental technician, after four years of veterinary medicine, Graziano left it all behind and began to teach himself his craft. Since 1984, he has actively been involved in passing on his craft, first in Bremen, and now in his Sardinian workshop.

INTERVIEW
Something that is little known is that all you need to soften leather and shape it is hot water. As it dries, it keeps the shape I have given it. That is all. No glue, no stitching and no machines are required.
I make my moulds, soak the leather in hot water, lay it over the mould and pull it with my hands and small wooden spatulas. Once dry, I trim it, decorate and colour it. A mask is typically ready to wear in three or four hours.
The moment when the wet leather starts to give under my fingers and take the form of the mould. I continue to be amazed by the fact that leather is a hard material that can turn soft and, once dry, stays still, exactly as you left it.
I will never forget when my father gave me the wooden tools and the compass I use for shaping masks. It was in the early 1980s, I had just left my studies. I still use that compass today to mark out the eye openings.
