At just five years old, Giuseppe Romeo began folding paper into origami, and by the age of 11, he was teaching his craft to others. Sustaining his practice into adulthood, he has been featured in magazines around the world, participated in international origami conventions, and established himself as one of Italy's emerging contemporary origami artists. "I am completely self-taught," he explains. Giuseppe has made dozens of original origami models, several of which have been shown at the international Origami by Children exhibition in the USA and in other museums. His Vespa model was featured on the cover of the American magazine The Paper, making him the first Italian origami artist to receive this recognition. In 2024, Giuseppe won first prize in the origami competition organised by the Italian Origami Association (Centro Diffusione Origami).
INTERVIEW
I saw a book about origami when I was five years old. I cannot explain why, but I was irresistibly drawn to it and cried to get my parents to buy it. After making my first origami creations, I could not bring myself to stop. I think origami found me, not the other way around.
I discover something new every time I fold. It is extraordinary that an infinite variety of shapes and volumes can emerge from a single flat sheet of paper. I think it is similar to music in that with just seven notes, countless universes can be created. Paper is no different.
After selecting the subject, I find the elements that define its structure. Then I make an initial arrangement with the sheet and find a way to connect the different parts. I keep changing the folds until everything has the right proportion and balance.
People are always shocked by what can be done with just one sheet of paper, and when they discover that they can make it come to life, too. I love seeing the surprise and satisfaction on their faces when they finish their models.
