Genoveva Hita

Silk painter

The elegant dance of silk painting

  • Genoveva opened her workshop in 2018
  • She masters the technique of watercolour on gutta
  • She defines what she does as 'silent luxury'

Genoveva Hita trained as a dancer. She studied at the Superior Conservatory of Dramatic Art and Dance in Madrid, specialising in Classical Ballet and Spanish Dance. After an injury, she returned to painting, a vocation she always had. "At first, it was something therapeutic, but then I felt the need for it to be the focus of my professional life, to transfer my artistic expression from dance to silk," she says. Genoveva's artistic inclinations began in her childhood when she watched her mother work in her ceramic workshop. From her, she learned to do things with sensitivity and care. She soon discovered that silk and its versatility were the perfect medium to bring her designs to life, inspired by ancient cultures. Her pieces are unique, timeless and elegant.

Why did you choose silk as your material?
I discovered that silk was the perfect medium to bring my creations to life because of its naturalness, movement and versatility. The working process is slow, very careful, and each piece is unique and unrepeatable. Working with noble and quality materials to create eternal pieces in which something of yourself is imprinted is something I love.
What is the relationship between Al-Andalus and your work?
I am inspired by its philosophy and vision of nature, its connection between the physical and the spiritual. My first collection was called Godai, the five elements, and represents the communion and spiritual connection between us and the world. Returning to our roots and feeling one with the elements.
How do you consider your craft?
More than a profession, it is a way of life. For me, it is about making art to enjoy and craftsmanship to consume. As such my creations must have a true identity, a personal stamp. It is wonderful to work with noble and natural products to make timeless products.
When do you know a piece is well made?
For me, it refers to the manufacturing of products using traditional techniques and skills, paying attention to details and a focus on quality and durability. Craftspeople work by hand to create unique and authentic pieces.
