Nature's palettes on ceramic one-offs
- Francesco's main source of inspiration is his native Puglia
- All his pieces are made with hand modelled clay
- His creations are the result of an experimentation with shapes and colours
Francesco Petracca’s first mentor was his mother, a ceramicist herself. "I recall dipping my hands in clay as a child and feelings its raw texture," he shares. In his mid-twenties, Francesco traded in his chef's hat for a ceramicist's apron. He opened his own workshop in 2019, out of which he works today as a self-taught artisan. Francesco exclusively creates one-off pieces, modelling everything by hand and steering clear from series and collections. He is also in constant dialogue with nature, inspired by the landscape of his homeland where the sea meets olive groves, and light has different hues. "My observation of nature has defined my ideal colour palette," Francesco explains. His goal is to open a restaurant and serve his dishes in ceramic tableware of his own making.
INTERVIEW
I learned that to be a ceramicist, I must be patient and accept mistakes. I really enjoy my craft and the search for beauty that comes with it. Through creating one-of-a kind pieces with soul, I adhere to my mission of keeping ceramic traditions of south-east Italy alive.
I wake up early in the morning and walk my two dogs. This is a moment of contemplation and observation of nature from which I draw inspiration and energy. I enjoy little things and seize every moment of my morning before I head to my workshop and spend the day there.
The process is different for every piece. Modelling can take up to three or four days, if the clay does not break. The kiln takes time to heat, and the firing cycle lasts up to 27 hours. Glazing is very quick, but then the pieces are fired again. The main challenge lies in the drying process, which can take a long time because of the humidity.
Not at all. Ceramics is a challenging yet extremely rewarding craft. I am always fascinated by Japanese ceramics, their concept of freehand circles and their search for perfection in imperfection. One can only learn from their mistakes.
