Federico Antelo Granero

Textile printer

An explosion of colour

  • Federico is inspired by geometry and constructivism
  • He has collaborated with Capas Seseña
  • He became interested in silk screen printing in India

Since opening his Madrid workshop in 2015, Federico Antelo has been exploring the use of fabric for interior design and fashion. His research aims to find different aesthetic options, from an artistic and experimental perspective, creating a dialogue between art and design. Cotton and linen - the natural fabrics he employs - are the canvas on which Federico, also a talented painter, expresses his creativity through the combination of colours and shapes. Patterns come to life while the silk screen printing process takes place, resulting in one-of-a-kind pieces of textile art. The use of colour gives Federico a sense of freedom, he is never afraid to mix and create very personal hues.

How does your craft relate to your homeland?
Spain has a centuries-old textile tradition, as far as lace, fabrics and embroidery is concerned. My work complements it, textile printing is an addition and adds an innovative element to more traditional textiles.
How do you combine tradition and innovation in your craft?
The silk screen printing technique is a hundred percent traditional. On the other hand, innovation lies in the design of patterns which are contemporary, as well as the colour palette which I never stop experimenting with.
What is little known about your work?
It’s a labour of love! It takes a long time, effort, passion, concentration. Sometimes people do not realise the amount of work that’s behind it, the fact that each colour and pattern are added one at a time.
Has there been a memorable moment in your career?
I am very proud of my latest creation that was recently exhibited during Madrid’s Design Month. I was given the opportunity to create a textile mural seven metres long at the Teatro Fernán Gómez, this was a memorable achievement.
