Weaver | Chur, Switzerland

Playful designs, traditional techniques

  • Eva is a traditional handweaver
  • She brings modernity to traditional techniques
  • Her work is simple, precise and playful

Eva Blanke Jüngling started out as a weaver quite spontaneously, when together with her twin sister she decided to apply to the hand weaving workshop at the Centro scolastico per le Industrie artistiche in Ticino. Both influenced by their mother’s many talents as a craftswoman, it felt quite natural for them to gravitate towards a mixture of craft apprenticeship, practical relevance, and theoretical basis. This is an interest that Eva has maintained to this day. Her pieces combine the complexity of traditional handweaving techniques, the creativity of imagined patterns, and the best materials to achieve perfectly designed pieces. Having taught for many years, Eva also offers classes where all can learn the basics of this timeless traditional craft.

What is your creative process?
For some time now, I have been working with untreated woollen yarns and linen in combination with simple weaving techniques. I try to combine these so that the material and the used techniques are expressed while also harmonising with the final piece.
How are tradition and creativity expressed in your work?
Tradition is, so to speak, inherent to weaving, as it is one of the oldest cultural techniques. In principle, however, the patterns provided by the technique can be infinitely varied, so perhaps the innovative aspect is that I combine and weave traditional patterns in new ways.
What is something people do not realise about your craft?
Usually people have no idea how mathematically complex textile fabrics can be. Nor do they realise that a finished fabric or finished product requires planning. This is a lengthy process of searching for materials, combining, calculating, trying out, discarding, and so on.
Was there a memorable moment of your life as a weaver?
One memorable moment was working together in my workshop with a young woman from Afghanistan. She hardly spoke German at the time, but our common craft and the shared experience of hand weaving across language and cultural boundaries touched me deeply.
